Your Holiday in
Vienna
Things to do in Vienna
Vienna is a musical city; home of the Viennese
Waltz, Vienna Boys Choir and Lipizzaner dancing horses. The genius work
of composers such as Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert and Strauss still
plays.
Vienna has several Art and History museums, as well
as several other attractions to make your visit to the capital of
Austria so exciting.
Vienna is famous for its Coffee Houses that still
play an important role in Viennese culture and tradition. It is
completely normal for a customer to linger alone for hours and study the
newspaper. Along with coffee, the waiter will serve an obligatory glass
of cold tap water and during a long stay will often bring additional
water unrequested. The furnishings of a Viennese café can vary from
plush and comfy to modern and stylish.
The massive theme park, Prater boasts more than 250
attractions, from the Giant Ferris Wheel, Arcades, Ghost Trains, Go-Cart
Rinks and Merry-Go- Rounds. Plus there are a number of cafes,
restaurants, snack bars and beer gardens. Vienna
Zoo is one of the few zoos in the world to house Giant Pandas. Other
animals at the zoo include Bats, Cheetahs, Elephants, Jaguars, Koalas, Orangutans, Penguins, Sea Lions, Timber Wolves and Vultures. There is
also an Aquarium House and Insectarium.
Must see Landmarks in Vienna
Clock Museum
The Vienna Clock Museum was opening
in 1921 and boasts an interesting collection. The collection includes
astronomical clocks showing phases of the moon and the paths of
planets. The famous Viennese lantern clocks are also on view. The
modern wristwatch has its place in the museum as well as the cuckoo
clock.
European Coat of Arms Museum
The European Coat of Arms Museum
traces the development of coats of arms and heraldry over the last 1,000
years. 12th century knights in armour covered their heads in
battle for greater protection. The shield bearing a coat of arms
evolved as kind of medieval “ID card”. Coats of arms became widespread
for professional guilds, trades and place names of towns. They were an
early version of what we call a “logo” today. This museum offers you
the opportunity to trace family surnames and is just a tram ride from
the Opera.
Jewish Museum
This is a 10 year old museum that
tells the story of Viennese Jews through a fascinating mix of temporary
and permanent exhibitions on specific themes. Viennese architecture,
literature, modern art, photography and salon culture are all featured.
Kunsthistorisches Museum
The Museum of Art History is one of
the premier museums of fine arts in the world. First opened in 1891,
the building is a rectangular shape and topped with a dome that is 60
metres high. The inside is beautifully decorated with marble and
paintings.
Staatsoper
The Vienna Opera House reopened in
1955 after it’s destruction from the war. The historical part from the
front of the original 1869 building is still visible. The façade
remains in Renaissance arched style and the loggia on the Ringstrasse
side underline the public character of the building. A popular
attraction for tourists.
Stadtpark
The Stadtpark is regarded as a link
between the city centre and the 3rd district. Not only is Stadtpark a
pleasant place to stroll through and is also home to Vienna’s famous
golden Johann Strauss statue.
