Things to do in Bruges
Bruges is one of
the most beautiful cities and best preserved cities in Europe. It
offers the kind of charms rarely seen elsewhere. Bridges, canals and
old city houses make it a very romantic place to visit.
Bruges came to
prominence in the 14th century. The good thing about Bruges
is that you find a city that has remained practically unchanged since
it’s heyday, at the end of the Middle Ages.
You can walk
along the canal and see all of the medieval gates that used to control
the traffic in and out of Bruges, have a beer at the Grote Markt, climb
the clock tower or go to Minnewater Park or van Eyck Plein. Nothing is
very far away in Bruges.
Must See Landmarks in Bruges
Bruges boasts
museums that attract thousands of visitors every year. Bruggemuseum is
the collective name for the 6 historical museums, each one of them an
impressive building with impressive collections. The 6 sites are:
Archaeology, Belfry, Church of Our Lady, City Hall, Gruuthuse and
Liberty of Bruges.
Bruges is not
only a world heritage city. A number of contemporary architecture
projects have been carried out in the centre of Bruges. 4 strong
architectural elements now stand face-to-face with the surrounding old
city.
The following
public gardens are a good idea if you are in need of a rest from the
hustle and bustle of the tourist centre: Baron Ruzettepark, Graaf
Visartpark, Koning Albertpark, Koningin Astridpark, Minnewaterpark,
Pastoor Verhaegheplantsoen and Stadspark Sebrechts.
Bruges also has
quite a few churches, though not all of them are open to the public.
Flemish art
collection. The Flemish Primitives, Rubens, Van Dyck. These artists
are known and exhibited all over the world. The most comprehensive
collections of their work are still to be found in their former home.
The Groeninge Museum portrays the history of visual arts in Flanders
from the 15th to the 21st century.
