Your Holiday in Bruges

How to get to Bruges

You can get to Bruges on Belgium's excellent rail system.  Trains to and from Brussels leave every 30 minutes during the day, taking 50-60 minutes to arrive in Bruges.  Trains from Ghent go Bruges take from 22 to 38 minutes and from Antwerp 80 minutes.

Brussels National Airport (located 8 miles from Brussels city centre) is the closest international airport to Bruges.  There are daily flights from most UK airports to Brussels.

If you are getting to Bruges by car, take the E40 from Brussels, Ghent or Veume, the N49 from Antwerp, the E403 from Kortrijk or Tournai or the N9 from Oostende.

P&O Ferries operate daily, sailing every evening from Hull to Zeebrugge, taking 12.5 hours to complete the crossing.

Travelling around/how to get around in Bruges

The historical centre is not so big and therefore it is walkable.  With a good map, it is easy to get around most of the medieval street layout of Bruges on foot.  There are miles of wonderful shops, cafes, restaurants, churches, etc.  There’s no better way to see these than walking.

The only mode of public transport inside the city is by bus.  De Lijn operates the Bruges city and regional bus services.  The main bus terminal is outside the railway station and provides more than 50 routes serving the city and surrounding areas, including the coast, with many services also stopping at  ‘t Zand, opposite the new Concert Hall and in the central Markt.  Discounted daily passes are available.

Central streets can be congested, and on-street parking is limited to designated areas on main streets.  Other areas require pay and display parking discs.  The maximum stay time between 09.00 and 19.00 in metered parking spaces is 4 hours, with these restrictions also applying to Sundays and public holidays.

Taxi stands can be found at Markt and the station, costing about 10€.

Bruges Tours and Guides

Tours run throughout most of the year - weather permitting - and cost on average 5.70€/person for a 30-minute excursion.

Make sure to take a ride on one of the tour boats around the canals – it’s the best introduction to Bruges!  The multilingual guides provide an expanded history of the city in just a few minutes, for just a few Euros.  A boat tour will show you places which are otherwise unreachable.

A boat tour will show you places which are otherwise unreachable, as not every canal runs next to a street.  You can get prices around 6€ for adults and 3€ for children.

Various tours can be organised within and around Bruges, including itineraries on art, beer, chocolate and more!
