With
a mythical history, spanning over two thousand years,
Rome offers as many if not more historical and cultural attractions than
any other place in the world. Rome, being the capital of Italy, is also
a dynamic modern hub blending both the new
with the old. Of course, this makes soaking up everything from this fantastic city impossible within
just one visit!
The city has
many historical and cultural layers, from Ancient Rome to Medieval Rome,
and from Christian Rome to Renaissance Rome, to name only a few of the
cities dynamic changes over it’s history. At some point, however,
everyone must visit the famous Colosseum, as well as the ruins at the
Roman Forum. The daunting Vatican Museums, Raphael's tomb at the
Pantheon, and the massive St. Peter's Basilica are other must sees.
Must See Landmarks in Rome
At the heart of
the former Roman Empire, word at the time stated that "All roads lead to
Rome". Having arrived in Rome you will soon see why; A blend of the old
and the new, from the ancient Colisseum to the wealth and splendour of
the Vatican City, Rome has attracted the world's very finest artists and
architects through out it’s history. You can see evidence of their
presence everywhere, making it a fantastically unique destination, which
walking around gives the feeling of walking around the world's biggest
museum!
Most would recommend that you begin your sightseeing trip with the
centro storico, where you shall find a vast collection of both Classical
and Christian sights contained within an easily navigable area by foot.
However, it doesn’t matter where you begin because there are certain
attractions which are a must see, including the fore mentioned Vatican
and Colosseum, the Pantheon, St. Peter's Basilica, the Piazza Navona,
the Catacombs, the Sistine Chapel and the hundreds of churches and
piazzas which are scattered throughout the city.
