Your Holiday in Rome
How to get to Rome
The main airport for Rome is the
Leonardo da Vinci airport, also known as Fiumicino. The other airport is
Ciampino, which is where most domestic, and some international flights
arrive.
Leonardo da Vinci or Fiumicino
airport is 26km southwest of Rome. One of the most convenient ways to
get into the city centre is by the Leonardo Express, the 30-minute
Fiumicino-Stazione Termini direct train, running every half hour from
the airport straight to the city centre. Ciampino is about 20km
southeast of the city, and from there you can catch a LiLa/Cotral bus
that then connects with a subway to Stazione Termini in the heart of
Rome.
Travelling
around/how to get around Rome
Transport
around Rome is relatively straight forward. There
are two Metro lines in Rome, Linea A (red) and Linea B (blue), which
cross at Termini railway station, the main station of the city. There
are also buses and trams available. The stops for these are mostly
well-labelled and easy to navigate; you will
need to check the route on the bus stop to plan your journey.
Main stops are listed, as is your present location
(highlighted), so you can make sure that you're going in the right
direction.
Buses and trams run until midnight
(but check the individual bus stops). The
Metro finishes frustratingly early, at around 11:30
every night except Saturdays, when it continues until
about 12:30. However, there is a decent night bus services which covers
most parts of Rome, and tending to converge at Termini on the hour and
half-hour as a general rule.
Rome Tours and
Guides
Taking a walking tour is the best
way to introduce yourself to the culture, history and the architecture
of Rome. You can get a guided tour around Ancient Rome and the Colosseum,
and tours around the Vatican are also particularly popular. Another
great way to see
Rome
is to book a bus tour which will take you to well known sites either
within the city, or to the surrounding areas. There is an impressive
variety of tours available; tours vary in length from 3 hours to full
day, evening, and even an overnight trip.
