Places to Eat and Drink in Amsterdam
Amsterdam is filled with places to
eat. From sidewalk pubs, to classy cafes, to superb restaurants. Beef
is commonly on the menu, but seafood is king.
Albert Heijn supermarkets are the
largest national chain and have cheap, ready-to-go meals on hand and
single-serving meals.
The influence of the Dutch
colonial past is apparent; Indonesian food in Amsterdam is usually
excellent whilst Indian food is often expensive and of poor quality
here. Surinamese food is widely available. The largest array of
Surinamese restaurants can be found in the Albert Cuypstraat. For
Chinese food, check out the Zeedijk/Nieuwmarkt area. Chinese food is
cheap and generally good quality. There are several Falafel bars
scattered around are very good value often offering a “all you can eat”
salad bar. Eetcafe’s are pubs that serve dinner too. Many restaurants
can be found in the Haarlemmerstraat and the Haarlemmerdijk. Exquisite
but expensive restaurants can be found in the Utechtse Straat.
Local cheese is marvellous. You
can buy some at the Albert Cuyp market or at specialist cheese shops
found around central Amsterdam. Dutch cheese is traditionally firm and
falls into 2 main categories: Young and Old. Within those categories
these exists a rich variety. Among the unusual young cheeses is Cumin,
Sheep and Goat. Old cheese can be made of any kind of milk.
Try some of the excellent beers you
can get in Amsterdam, including Heineken and Witbeer (White beer).
Also taste “bitterballen”, a fried
meatball, and the “kroketten”, similar but shaped like a cylinder!
Don’t forget to try the “broodje haring” (herring sandwich), available
from the dozens of fish stalls across the city.
