Travelling
around/how to get around London
Buses are a
quick and convenient way to travel around London and will get you
anywhere you want to go, albeit a bit slower than the tube, which gives
you a chance to see the scenery on the way.
Cycling is the
cheapest, fastest and healthiest way of travelling around London.
London’s famous
black cabs can either be booked in advance, hailed on the street or from
designated taxi ranks. To go from one end of London o the other in a
taxi, it should cost about £25. Fares are more economical if you
share.
Overland trains
play a crucial part as the international gateway to the UK by providing
vital airport links.
London’s tube is
the oldest underground train system in the world. It’s the backbone of
London’s public transport with 150,000 people entering the tube system
every hour.
Walking is a
fantastic way to get around and enjoy the capital. It’s free, healthy
and enables you to take in the sights of London on your route.
London Tours and
Guides
London offers
excellent guided walks (you can get 2-3 hours of guided walks on a
variety of themes for around £6). But buyers beware, there are lots of
impostor walking guides - make sure you are getting the real deal!
Open top bus
tours offer a good, but somewhat expensive introduction to the sights of
London. 2 principal operators tend to dominate the market for this kind
of tour: The Big Bus Company and The Original Tour. Both provide
hop-on/hop-off services where you can get off at any attraction and
catch the next bus. Both also provide live commentaries in English and
recorded commentaries in other languages.
